Paths of Limbo

Paths of Limbo is a multiplayer deck-builder & roguelike board game prototype that I designed for one of my solo projects during my 2nd year at York University.

Objectives

This game pits two roles against each other: Strays (1-3 people) and Maze Boss (1 person).

The Strays' goal is for everyone to make it out of the maze to the end without dying. For better chances of survival, they will defeat random creatures along the way to build up their team and get stronger.

The Maze Boss’ goal is to kill the Strays before they escape the maze. This means using all the resources available (creature cards, terrain cards, and eventually their own boss card) to make sure the Strays don’t get too powerful before the Maze Boss can catch and battle them.

Setup

Each player will get a blank character card that they will need to fill out before starting the game. This stage is where all players will determine their character's stats. The Maze Boss' blank character card is different from the Strays,' so the things you can customize will depend on what role you have.

Once character creation is done, it's time to set up the maze. The maze will be randomly generated by shuffling a deck of board pieces face-down and drawing a minimum of 3 maze planks to place between the given start and end planks. Each player is also equipped with a board piece to represent themselves. The Strays start on the "start" square, and the Maze Boss on the "exit" square.

Gameplay

All players can move around the board in any direction they want during what is called a travel phase, which is initiated every time the Strays roll a D4. The maximum number of steps for Strays is determined by the D4 roll. The maximum number of steps for the Maze Boss is always 2.

On their journey, Strays will encounter random creatures controlled by the Maze Boss on the squares marked with a blue circle. Strays will fight these creatures to survive and build their team. Battles are turn-based, so parties take turns listing out what they'd like to do for each of their cards on the battlefield. A battle is won when one side has no more cards left to battle with. If a player's character card is down to 0 HP at any point, they cannot continue the game.

In addition, other landmarks on the board will either help or hinder the Strays' journey.
